Liturgical calendar(December 2022)
Today’s post is the traditional liturgical calendar (the calendar of the Catholic Church). Even though we are praying Sunday vespers, we live in the world where we can’t attend the traditional Mass every day. So, in modern Japan, is the traditional liturgical calendar irrelevant and merely trivia? I don’t think so.
One of the reasons is that by knowing the traditional liturgical calendar, we can know how our ancestors lived their spiritual lives in the flow of time. As we can develop new thoughts based on study of the past, we can’t discard the past in order to think about the present.
Another reason is that when you know that the Catholic Church has multiple legal calendars, you will realize that the Catholic Church is characterized by it’s diversity. I think this helps us not to get stuck in a narrow view of what we’re using right now as the best or the only one.
Therefore, from the point of view that it is useful to know the traditional liturgical calendar, we will introduce it at the beginning of each month.
