We are dedicated to preserving the rich liturgical heritage of the Catholic Church, centered on the Traditional Latin Mass, and to promoting its continued use in contemporary Japan.
This page explains the principles and position that guide our activities.
1. Both the Reformed Mass and the Traditional Mass Are Important
We do not claim that only the Traditional Mass matters.
Rather, just as the Ordinary Form of the Mass is precious, we believe that the Traditional Mass should also be cherished.
This conviction is rooted in our belief that the Catholic Church is a broad and inclusive community capable of embracing legitimate diversity.
Our position follows the vision expressed by Pope Benedict XVI, affirming that support for the Traditional Mass is fully compatible with fidelity to the Second Vatican Council.
2. Accepting One Another
Our guiding principle is expressed in the words:
“Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you.” (Romans 15:7)
Whether one prefers the Ordinary Form or the Traditional Mass, we hope for a Catholic Church in which all are united through the Eucharist and work together for the growth of the Kingdom of God.
3. Remaining Firmly Within the Catholic Church
We faithfully follow the rules established by the Holy Father and by our local bishops.
While we have found recent measures toward supporters of the Traditional Mass under Pope Francis to be pastorally lacking in sensitivity and compassion — a fact we regret deeply, especially in light of his many admirable qualities as a shepherd — we nonetheless choose obedience to the Church’s authority.
We do so because we believe that Christ is the head of the Church and that the Roman Pontiff is His vicar on earth.
For this reason, we remain steadfast within the Catholic Church while continuing to uphold our convictions respectfully and faithfully.
4. Restoring a Sense of the Sacred
As an organization of Catholic faithful, membership in Una Voce Japan is limited to Catholics.
However, because we believe the Traditional Mass to be a treasure of all humanity, all people are welcome to attend the Masses we organize.
In modern Japan, where a sense of the sacred and reverence has greatly diminished, the Traditional Mass offers a powerful encounter with what is holy and awe-inspiring.
Its spiritual and cultural value extends not only to Catholics but also to those who seek a deeper experience of transcendence.
